From learning to investing: Velina's first angel cheque

  • 2 min read

Velina did not join the Angel Accelerator to make an investment right away. She joined to learn.

“I joined to explore new ways to put my money to work beyond the stock market and to empower founders from non-traditional backgrounds.”

That is exactly the stance we see most often in our cohorts. Curiosity, conviction, and the sense that there must be something more meaningful than another ETF. What Velina did differently is the part worth paying attention to.

What changed in the program

Across six sessions, Velina worked through the parts of investing that most people never get a structured shot at: building her own investor profile, reading and assessing real startup decks, sitting in on collective evaluations, meeting more experienced angels in our community.

“The program changed the way I think about risk in early-stage investing.”

Risk gets misunderstood when you only encounter it from the outside. From the inside, risk becomes a question you can actually break down: What kind of bet is this? What has to be true for it to work? What would I need to see in the next 12 months to keep my conviction? Along the way she reviewed tens of decks, met dozens of angels, and built the language and the network to evaluate opportunities with clarity, not anxiety.

The shift, in her own words

“The experience gives me confidence that when I spot that special opportunity, I will be prepared.”

Then, shortly after finishing the program, Velina spotted that special opportunity and made her first angel investment. Confidence and clarity tend to find their first deal pretty quickly once you know what you are looking for.

Why we feature stories like this

We are deliberate about telling participant stories rather than program promises. The pattern matters more than the polish. After Cohort 1, within one month of finishing the program, 80% of participants were investing or actively evaluating deals, and 40% had made their very first angel investment. Velina is one face of that pattern.

What it looks like for you

Our free Introduction to Angel Investing & Q&A webinar runs every month. The June Angel Accelerator cohorts are open: Cohort 4 (online) starts Tuesday 16 June, and Cohort 5 (in-person) starts Thursday 18 June. Both include a one-year AtVenture Angels membership. Why wait another year? The cohort that gets you to your first investment is the one you actually start.
